How to get rid of tires

Of the 710 facilities we’ve verified so far, 125 mention accepting tires in their posted rules, 27 say they don’t or restrict them, and 103 post a specific fee. The rest don’t mention them, so call ahead.

Scrap tires are regulated by each state, not federally, so rules vary a lot. Many landfills charge per tire, limit how many a household can bring, require tires to be off the rim, or send tires to a separate collection area. Some don't take them at all.

Other options. Tire shops usually take your old tires when you buy new ones (often for a small fee that may already be on your receipt). Many counties hold free tire amnesty or collection days. Your state environmental agency's scrap tire program page lists registered tire haulers and drop-off sites.

Before you go. Ask the per-tire price, the limit per visit, whether rims must be removed, and whether truck or tractor tires cost more.

Don't want to haul it yourself? Get a junk removal quote

Junk removal crews load and dispose of it for you, usually priced by how much of the truck you fill.

Tip: get two or three quotes from local junk removal companies, and ask whether the price includes the dump fee and labor.

Bigger project? Estimate the dumpster size you need.
