Most landfills and transfer stations charge a flat per-item fee for mattresses and for fridges, freezers and other refrigerant appliances. That fee is on top of, or instead of, the normal trash rate. We pulled the posted fees from facility rate pages and checked each one against its source.

Across 19 distinct mattress fee schedules (28 facilities in 11 states), the median is $20.00, with a range of $10 to $64. Across 14 refrigerant-appliance schedules (25 facilities in 12 states), the median is $22.50, with a range of $10 to $68. Fridges usually cost more because the refrigerant has to be removed by a certified technician before the unit can be recycled.

These are posted fees at the facilities we could verify, not a national average. Your local dump may charge more or less, or nothing at all. Many counties take mattresses or appliances free from residents.
