Before you take metal to a scrap yard

Call first. Yards differ in what they buy (steel, aluminum, copper, brass, appliances, cars, batteries) and prices change daily. We don’t list prices.
Bring ID. Most states require scrap buyers to record your ID, and some limit cash payment for certain metals.
Sort it. Non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, aluminum) usually pay more than steel. A magnet sticks to steel and iron but not to the more valuable metals.
Appliances. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units hold refrigerant that must be removed by a certified technician, so many yards require proof it was removed.
