Before you take metal to a scrap yard

  • Call first. Yards differ in what they buy (steel, aluminum, copper, brass, appliances, cars, batteries) and prices change daily. We don’t list prices.
  • Bring ID. Most states require scrap buyers to record your ID, and some limit cash payment for certain metals.
  • Sort it. Non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, aluminum) usually pay more than steel. A magnet sticks to steel and iron but not to the more valuable metals.
  • Appliances. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units hold refrigerant that must be removed by a certified technician, so many yards require proof it was removed.

Scrap yards aren’t dumps: they want metal, not trash. For mixed junk, see the nearest dump or appliance disposal.

Don't want to haul it yourself? Get a junk removal quote

Junk removal crews load and dispose of it for you, usually priced by how much of the truck you fill.

Tip: get two or three quotes from local junk removal companies, and ask whether the price includes the dump fee and labor.

Bigger project? Estimate the dumpster size you need.
