Don't want to haul it yourself? Get a junk removal quote

Junk removal crews load and dispose of it for you, usually priced by how much of the truck you fill.

Tip: get two or three quotes from local junk removal companies, and ask whether the price includes the dump fee and labor.

General tips for mattresses

Most landfills and many transfer stations take mattresses and box springs, but they are bulky, so many charge a per-item fee instead of (or on top of) the normal weight-based rate. Some sites refuse them outright or only take them from residents.

Other options. California, Connecticut and Rhode Island run state mattress recycling programs (Bye Bye Mattress) with free drop-off sites, funded by a fee paid when a mattress is bought; check the Mattress Recycling Council for current states and sites. Many retailers will haul away an old mattress when they deliver a new one. Cities that offer bulk or bulky-item curbside pickup often include mattresses; check your city's sanitation page.

Before you go. Some facilities require mattresses to be bagged (bed-bug rules) or dry. Ask whether the fee is per piece and whether box springs count separately.
